Yang Mao-Lin graduated from the Chinese Culture University's Department of Fine Arts in 1979. He was the first director and a founding member of the Taipei Painting School in 1985. His work spans multiple genres, including painting, computer animation, installation, and sculpture. Yang explores his native Taiwan by juxtaposing historical space-times, and investigating the ways in which a cultural phenomenon has derived from the transpiring vibrant vitality and vivacious fascination of colonial hybridization. Yang reflects upon various unexpected cultural characteristics of Taiwan in an open-minded and humorous manner, though he criticizes the long-term influences of Japanese and American culture on Taiwanese society.
Yang's works have been shown in numerous local and international exhibitions since his first solo exhibition 101 Yang Mao-Lin Solo Exhibition in 1985 at the Taichung Culture Center, including Made in Taiwan - I at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum (1990); Exhibition of Taiwanese Art, Rome, Italy (1995); VOC Handle with Care at the 48th Venice Biennale, Collateral Event, Ateneo San Basso, Piazza San Marco, Venice, Italy (1999); Yang Mao-Lin Solo Exhibition at the Melbourne Art Fair, Australia (2002); Temple of Sublime Beauty - Made in Taiwan at the 53rd Venice Biennale, Collateral Event, Sala S. Tommaso, S. Giovanni e Palo, Venice, Italy (2009); and Temple of Sublime Beauty-Hallelujah at the Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei, Taiwan (2009). Yang was the recipient of both the First Hsiungshin Prize for Fine Arts and the Li Chun Shen Foundation's Contemporary Painting Prix in 1991. He was also awarded the Li Jhong-Sheng Foundation Modern Art Award in 1999.
