Yang02 Biography

Born in Kanagawa Prefecture in 1984, yang02 graduated with a master’s degree in Information Design (Media Art) from Tama Art University in 2009. With a background that leaned towards street art as a teenager, while studying Media Art at university, yang02 has consistently used technology from the beginning of his career to the present to create works inspired by expression in the public area. The purpose of creating entities that substitute/extend human action through physical engineering, such as a device that generates graffiti, is to expose and critique the privileged nature of human existence and physicality by vividly backlighting it, often too obvious for us to be aware of it.

Recently, he manifestly chose to use ready-made products or misuse existing information systems, such as powered products like a Segway or machine learning systems developed by Google, in which more current technologies are installed. In the end, he relates them, constructing systems and places, and turning them into artworks as installation. He intervenes in the established system of information technology, which has become a part of our daily lives, revealing errors and bugs through the cracks in the system. This exposes the political, social, and violent issues that are hidden by the spectacle and convenience of technology, and provides an opportunity to think about what we and technology should be.

His works show how information technology can substitute human actions in the form of autonomous devices. Through digital media, his practice inquires into human physicality and the independence of one’s actions or expression. His works SENSELESS DRAWING BOT and Avatars, both created in collaboration with So Kanno, were awarded, respectively, the New Face Award at the 15th Japan Media Arts Festival in 2012 and the Excellence Award at the 21st Japan Media Arts Festival in 2018. Recent solo exhibitions include _prayground (2019, rin art association, Gunma) and group exhibitions include 20th DOMANI: The Art of Tomorrow (2018, The National Art Center, Tokyo), Vanishing Mesh (2017, Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media [YCAM]) and Aichi Triennale (2016, Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art).
