ZAO WOU-KI
1920-2013, ChinaZao studied at Hangzhou Art Academy under Wu Dayu. In 1948 he left for Paris where he became friends with many important young artists and dealers. His first solo show in Paris was held by Galerie Creuze in 1949. Zao has participated in ARCO 1998, the international fair in Madrid, The FIAC in Paris, and in 2003, exhibited at the Marlbourough Gallery, New York from October until December. He continues to show his works regularly at the galleries of France, Switzerland and UK.
Zao’s abstract paintings reveal the feeling of nature typified by the Chinese literary painters. Their works express nature and the spirit of mountain and water in their structure and create an atmosphere like the swelling of water and the surging of clouds around the mountains. His works are found in numerous world class museums: Tate Gallery, London; Museum of Modern Art, Guggenheim Museum, New York; Art Institute of Chicago; Musee d’Art Modern, Paris etc.
