Gertrude Glasshouse is the satellite gallery of Gertrude Contemporary in Collingwood, Melbourne, on Wurundjeri Country, dedicated to solo projects by artists in Gertrude’s studio program. Located in a converted glassworks factory at 44 Glasshouse Road, the 100-square-metre venue extends Gertrude’s reputation as one of Australia’s key incubators of contemporary art into Melbourne’s inner north, with free entry and a focused exhibition calendar from Thursday to Saturday.
Designed by Sibling Architecture, Gertrude Glasshouse transforms its former industrial shell into a flexible white-cube gallery framed by a striking mirrored entry alcove that acts as a threshold between the cobbled laneway and the exhibition space. An oversized steel-and-glass door, reflective grid cladding and illuminated ceiling create a heightened sense of arrival, while a large operable wall allows the gallery to open directly onto the street, blurring boundaries between public and exhibition space. Inside, a neutral, pared-back interior with exposed concrete-coffered ceiling offers an adaptable environment for ambitious, experimental installations.
Gertrude Glasshouse is the home of the Gertrude Studio Artist Solo Exhibition Program, giving each artist in the two-year studio residency the opportunity to develop and present a substantial new project. The space also hosts select additional exhibitions and collaborations, including photography and festival projects, reflecting Gertrude’s commitment to supporting risk-taking, process-driven contemporary practices. Supported by long-term patrons Michael Schwarz and David Clouston, the Glasshouse extends Gertrude’s city-wide footprint and offers visitors a concentrated way to encounter emerging and mid-career artists shaping Australian contemporary art.
