Katie Shannon (b. Glasgow) is the latest artist to participate in Goldsmiths CCA’s ongoing commissioning series, Episodes. Based between Glasgow and London, Shannon works across visual art, performance, writing, and event making.
The works included in this exhibition at Goldsmiths CCA have been informed by two events that are of personal and political significance to Shannon. First, the gradual demolition of Cumbernauld town centre, a brutalist commercial centre in the area in which she grew up. Second, the final event from a music label and series called ‘So Low’, which she ran collaboratively with friends for 11 years (2014-2025).
Both endings of sorts, the place and the event series, the architecture and the music, have overlapping and interconnected histories. At the heart of this exhibition is an artistic reflection on the connection between post-industrial musics and Brutalist architectural forms, the gap between such moments and the ever-compressed present, in which the spaces and places connected with peripheral musics are slowly squeezed out, in the relentless drive for profit and ‘progress’.
The exhibition will run from November 6–December 13, with a public opening scheduled for Thursday, November 5.
Located on the campus of Goldsmiths, University of London, Goldsmiths Centre for Contemporary Art is London’s newest contemporary arts institution, and open to everyone. Hosting world-class exhibitions by international artists, and providing a space for established and emergent practices, the institution aims to enhance Goldsmiths’ reputation for excellence and innovation in the arts. Curatorially ambitious, the exhibition programme has been devised to encompass a wide-range of exhibition-making, including new commissions, historical presentations, survey exhibitions, and long-term research projects. These are iterated in response to the spaces that make up the institution, ranging from top lit white cubes to a converted iron-lined Victorian water tank.
