This exhibition explores the connections between the work of Richard Crichton, Albert Tucker, and Brett Whiteley during their shared years living at New York’s Chelsea Hotel from 1967 and 1969. As Australian artists navigating the city’s competitive avant-garde art scene, each forged a distinct response to the American environment.

Crichton and Whiteley drew heavily on music—Crichton from the street-level theatre of brass bands and carnival jazz and Whiteley from the constant presence of Bob Dylan as he channelled the American psyche into raw, expressive imagery. Tucker, though occasionally influenced by the local jazz scene, maintained a more deliberately antipodean visual language.

The Chelsea Hotel years were both challenging and galvanising for these artists, and the exhibition offers insight into the work that came out of this formative period and experiences that shaped it.

About the Artist

In the 1970s and 1980s, Brett Whiteley’s paintings reflected popular media perceptions of the notion of an expressionist avant-garde artist as an intuitive intellect and tortured genius. Whitely was a prodigious talent, awarded first prize in the Young Painter’s section of the Bathurst Show at the age of 17, he attended the Julian Ashton School (1957-59) and travelled to London in 1960, remaining in England and then New York for ten years.

Heide Museum of Modern Art, commonly known as Heide, is a public art museum in Bulleen, on the banks of the Birrarung/Yarra River around nine kilometres north-east of central Melbourne, Australia. Established as a museum in 1981, Heide occupies the former home and property of arts patrons John and Sunday Reed, who bought the then-dairy farm in 1934 and transformed it into a hub for Australian modernism. Set within 16 acres of heritage-listed gardens and sculpture park, the museum now presents modern and contemporary art across three main buildings and is recognised as one of Australia’s most important cultural sites. Heide’s intertwined histories of art, architecture, landscape, and progressive social experiment give it a distinctive place within Melbourne’s cultural ecology.
