Lawh Wa Qalam: M. F. Husain Museum is a dedicated modern art museum in Education City, Doha, that immerses visitors in the life, late work, and creative imagination of Maqbool Fida Husain, one of the most influential modern artists of the 20th century.
The Museum was commissioned by Qatar Foundation and inaugurated on 28 November 2025 as the first museum entirely devoted to Husain. Located at the heart of Education City, the institution aligns visual art with an ecosystem of universities and research centres, positioning the museum as both cultural destination and learning hub within Doha’s expanding arts landscape.
The building originates from a 2008 sketch by Husain and is realised by architect Martand Khosla as a striking blue-grey complex of rectilinear volumes and a cylindrical tower, evoking a sculptural object set in the desert light. Spanning over 3,000 square metres across three main structures, the museum combines galleries, an auditorium, library, café, and creativity hub, supporting exhibitions, talks, workshops, and interdisciplinary programmes.
Maqbool Fida Husain is considered a pivotal figure in modern Indian art for the way he fused European modernist languages such as Cubism with distinctly Indian subjects drawn from mythology, history, cinema, and everyday life.
As a founding member of the Bombay Progressive Artists’ Group after Independence, he helped shift Indian painting away from academic and revivalist styles toward a bold, secular, and globally conversant modernism. His highly recognisable visual language—dynamic compositions, strong contour lines, vivid colour, and often monumental scale—made complex narratives accessible to a wide public and earned him the epithet ‘Picasso of India’.
Over a long, prolific career that extended into film, installation, and public projects, Husain turned the canvas into a site for telling the story of a diverse, modern India, which is why he remains one of the most widely known and influential artists of the 20th century in South Asia and beyond.
Doha has a museum dedicated to M. F. Husain because Qatar became his main home in exile, granted him citizenship in 2010, and commissioned some of his most ambitious late works, including the Arab Civilization paintings and Seeroo fi al ardh. Lawh Wa Qalam was created by Qatar Foundation partly to honour a personal promise made to Husain by Sheikha Moza bint Nasser and to give his work a permanent home after he could no longer safely live or show in India. The museum also fits Qatar’s broader cultural strategy: it anchors Education City’s arts infrastructure and positions Doha as a hub where South Asian and Arab modernisms, and the wider Global South, can be studied and experienced in depth.
The museum presents one of the most comprehensive assemblies of Husain’s later works, including paintings, sculptures, films, tapestries, photographs, and personal objects that trace his journey from mid-century modernism to his final years in Qatar. A core focus is his Arab Civilization series, created in Doha and exploring Islamic history, regional architecture, and everyday life through his distinctive, calligraphic figuration and bold colour.
At the centre of the museum is Seeroo fi al ardh (Walk in the Land), Husain’s last and most ambitious multimedia work, staged in a dedicated gallery as an immersive environment of movement, sound, and mechanical choreography. Across the galleries, thematic displays are introduced with the artist’s own words and arranged to encourage meandering, inviting visitors to read his horses, mythic figures, and urban scenes as a continuous narrative of exile, belonging, and cross-cultural exchange.
Lawh Wa Qalam: M. F. Husain Museum is situated in Qatar Foundation’s Education City campus in Doha, making it easily combinable with other cultural and educational institutions in the district. Early announcements indicate core visiting hours from Tuesday to Thursday, 10:00am to 5:00pm, with additional days and timings confirmed through Qatar Foundation and museum channels; visitors should check the official website for the latest opening hours and ticketing details before planning a visit.
Amenities include a café, gift shop, library, and multi-purpose auditorium, alongside spaces for workshops and learning programmes, reinforcing the museum’s emphasis on art as a catalyst for lifelong education and dialogue. The institution is designed as an accessible, family-friendly environment within Education City, welcoming students, local communities, and international visitors interested in modern art, Gulf cultural history, and Husain’s global legacy.
Lawh Wa Qalam is the first museum worldwide dedicated solely to M. F. Husain, foregrounding his later practice and deep connection to Qatar. By situating his work within Education City, the museum positions modern art as a space for research, dialogue, and cultural exchange between the Gulf, South Asia, and a global public.
Visitors encounter more than 150 works across media, from large-scale paintings and tapestries to films, photography, and personal artefacts. Highlights include Husain’s Arab Civilization series and the immersive installation Seeroo fi al ardh, alongside displays that revisit recurring motifs such as horses, historical epics, and urban life.
The museum opened to the public on 28 November 2025 as part of Qatar Foundation’s cultural initiatives in Education City. Initial information suggests daytime opening hours on selected weekdays, including 10:00am–5:00pm from Tuesday to Thursday, with visitors advised to confirm current schedules via the official website or local listings.
Ticketing is managed through Qatar Foundation and the museum’s own channels, with details and any concessions for students, families, or local residents published online. Prospective visitors should consult the official Lawh Wa Qalam or Education City websites for up-to-date information on prices, advance booking, and special events before travelling.
Lawh Wa Qalam integrates guided experiences, talks, workshops, and interdisciplinary programmes that draw on Husain’s work to connect art with fields such as architecture, design, and technology. Many activities are designed for students and educators across Education City as well as general audiences, making the museum a dynamic resource for learning and community engagement in Doha.
