Art World Pays Tribute to Hilde Lynn Helphenstein, Satirist Behind Jerry Gogosian

The art world is today paying tribute to the commentator and satirist Hilde Lynn Helphenstein, better known by her online moniker Jerry Gogosian, who has died at the age of 40 in Brazil, according to local media reports.
The former gallerist was reportedly found dead yesterday at the Rosewood São Paulo hotel. In a statement to Ocula, a spokesperson for the São Paulo State Government confirmed that police are investigating the death of a 40-year-old woman at a hotel in the area, and that the case had been registered with local officials as a suspicious death.
Helphenstein began gaining notoriety online in 2018 after launching her Instagram account combining art world commentary and memes, which took its name from art critic Jerry Saltz and mega-dealer Larry Gagosian. The account now has 152,000 followers.
In an Instagram post shared yesterday, Saltz said Helphenstein “tattled and rattled cages at a moment when this really needed it”. He continued: “I found myself very sad at her death; her writing always had a real suspiciousness, knowingness, and even cynicism to it. But the art world beat a path to her byline.”
In another post, the auctioneer and art dealer Simon de Pury wrote of being “saddened and shocked” to hear of Helphenstein’s death. Recalling a conversation he moderated between her and Kenny Schachter, he said: “It was an invigorating talk between two super witty and intelligent art world observers and artists who shared a deep passion for art.”
In another tribute, cultural strategist and Artnet columnist Luning Wang wrote: “What many people didn’t see was that behind Jerry Gogosian was someone with a genuine artist’s dream.
“…In an art world driven by markets and relationships, she managed to hold on to a sense of purpose. RIP Hilde. Thank you for your honesty, your humor, and your courage to say what many others would not.”
Helphenstein’s final Instagram post, a video published three days ago, has since been flooded with comments sharing tributes and condolences. A comment by the account of Dutch artists Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta, known as Studio Drift, read: “An important critical voice in the art world has been lost.
“No stone unturned, unrestricted by industry politics always ready for an alternative reflection making heavy topics [light] with humour and unpopular opinions. Always a nudge to make all our ego’s a little less bloated. You will be missed.”
Following the success of Jerry Gogosian, Helphenstein launched the Sotheby’s sale Jerry Gogosian’s Suggested Followers: How the Algorithm Is Always Right, the substack newsletter The Jerry Report and the podcast Art Smack. However, in June 2025 she announced plans to wind down her online persona, writing that she had “outgrown” the project.
