Fashion brand Saint Laurent is featuring the work of Texan artist Donald Judd (1928–1994) in its Rive Droite location in Paris, which reopened with a collection of original designs by the furniture designer last Thursday.
Saint Laurent’s creative director, Anthony Vaccarello, said Judd’s work stands for ‘uncompromising artistic excellence’. Aluminium and plywood benches inside the store along with a new product line of chairs, tables, desks, and beds in steel and traffic white painted aluminium will match the Maison’s signature colours.
Both the conceptual artist and the luxury brand are known for their sleek, minimal style.
Alongside the reopening, the Maison held an exhibition of the artist’s woodblock prints on the upper floor, and a range of items from clothing and accessories to books, vinyl records, cameras, and skateboards—all available to purchase.
The collaboration with the Donald Judd Foundation is one of Vaccarello’s many projects including opening a bookshop inside a former store, a film division, and most recently a sushi restaurant in the basement level of their Rive Droite boutique.
Donald Judd started making furniture in the 1970s in Marfa, Texas, in response to limited supply. He distinguished his work in design from his art, writing that the first alone is characterised by functionality. —[O]
