Former Tate Director Frances Morris Follows Gallery’s Sustainability Promise by Chairing Climate Board

The Gallery Climate Coalition (GCC) has announced the appointment of renowned museum curator and art historian Frances Morris CBE as chair of their board.

Morris will further GCC’s mission of integrating environmental responsibility into the art world with the goal of reducing the sector’s CO₂ emissions by 50 percent by 2030, based on 2019 levels.

Celebrating its fifth anniversary this year, recent initiatives by the board include the International Art Fair Alliance, Strategic Climate Fund policy, the Artist Toolkit, and a newly updated Carbon Calculator tool.

Morris said the art world has the opportunity and responsibility to ensure it leads by example in building a more sustainable future.

‘The urgency of the climate crisis demands bold, collective action, and GCC has already made remarkable strides in galvanising the art world towards meaningful change,’ she said.

Morris served as director of Tate Modern from 2016 to 2023, where she expanded the collection beyond the western canon, promoted gender equality in programming, and introduced performance and live art into the gallery’s collections.

She also led Tate’s commitment to sustainability, including the 2019 Climate Emergency declaration, and helped shape green museum principles like adopting a train-first travel policy and switching to a green electricity tariff. —[O]
