Nat Faulkner Wins 2024 Emerging Artist Prize at Frieze

News Frieze London 2024 Receipts: Steady Sales Despite Headwinds Annabel Downes

London-based artist Nat Faulkner is the recipient of the 2024 Camden Art Centre Emerging Artist Prize at Frieze London, which unfolds at Regent’s Park until 13 October.

Faulkner’s presentation features large-scale photographs conceived with darkroom processes and sculptures made from silvering, the traditional method used to make glass mirrors, introducing irregularity to the pieces.

As part of the award, he will realise a solo exhibition at Camden Art Centre in 2025. The show will be supported by the institution’s curatorial team and accompanied by public talks and events.

Faulkner’s gallery, Brunette Coleman in London, was selected from 34 galleries in Frieze London’s ‘Focus’ section, dedicated to supporting younger galleries and artists in early stages of their careers.

‘The ‘Focus’ section is always a highlight of Frieze London and this year is one of the strongest presentations yet,’ said Martin Clark, Director of Camden Art Centre. ‘Nat Faulkner’s work caught the jury’s attention for its rigorous and seductive use of materials and process, we can’t wait to start working with him on his show at Camden in 2025,’ Clark said.

In addition to Clark, the jury panel comprised Gina Buenfeld Murley (Curator, Camden Art Centre) and Joseph Constable (Head of Exhibitions, De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill-on-Sea).

‘It’s a surreal way to start our first year presenting at Frieze, we’re beyond grateful to Camden Art Centre for this exciting opportunity,’ Brunette Coleman said in a statement. ‘We’re already anticipating how Nat can push his sculptural and photographic language at an even more ambitious scale for the exhibition in 2025.’

Now in its sixth year, the annual Emerging Artist Prize, first unveiled at Frieze London in 2018, offers critical exposure to an emerging artist, concurrent with their first show at a London institution.

Previous receipients include Jack O’Brien, whose exhibition, The Reward, is on view at Camden Art Centre until 29 December 2024; Marina Xenofontos (2022); Tenant of Culture (2020); Julien Creuzet (2019); and Wong Ping (2018). —[O]
