The new Hyundai Terrace Commission will include installations, sculptures, and performances. As part of the partnership, Hyundai Motor will also support the next five editions of the Whitney Biennial.
Designed by architect Renzo Piano, the museum’s outdoor terraces are ‘an interface between the museum, the New York community, and the neighbouring Hudson River and High Line,’ as Scott Rothkopf, the Alice Pratt Brown Director of the Whitney Museum, said in a statement.
‘With Hyundai’s generous support for both the Whitney Biennial and the Hyundai Terrace Commission, we can now realise the true potential of our grandest “outdoor gallery”,’ he said.
The Hyundai Terrace Commission is the latest addition to Hyundai Motor’s collaboration with art museums and organisations, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea; Tate Modern, UK; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Korean Pavilion at the Venice Biennale.
‘We look forward to how this multi-year partnership for the Whitney Biennial and the Hyundai Terrace Commission will amplify diverse voices, shaping our collective future through boundless explorations,’ said Euisun Chung, Executive Chair of Hyundai Motor Group.
The Commission will launch on 20 March 2024 with the opening of Whitney Biennial 2024: Even Better Than the Real Thing. —[O]
