When looking at a painting by Eleonore Koch, her unequivocal familiarity with the nuances of abstract painting comes to the fore.

Koch’s magical compositions harness the power of the quotidian while maintaining an innate subtlety in style and technique. Her oeuvre is at once elegantly unfussy and evocative.

In Sem título (1972), Koch suspends a greek statue—recalling the vistas of Giorgio de Chirico—in a theatrical backdrop made from earthy pigments and simplified forms. The painting testifies to Koch’s exquisite ability to defamiliarise the familiar by summoning domestic objects to a dreamlike setting.

To celebrate the Brazilian artist’s momentous career, Travesía Cuatro, Madrid and Almeida & Dale, São Paulo, join forces to present an exhibition of rare paintings and drawings by Koch, shown for the first time in Madrid at the Fernando de Castro Foundation (20 February–3 March 2023).

Curated by Cristiano Raimondi, the show will feature preparatory studies and drawings never before seen publicly.

The show is a unique opportunity to witness Koch’s powerful fusion of subject, colour, and technique in the flesh.
