Press Release

Alzueta Gallery is pleased to present La Santísima Brocha del Divino Descontrol, an exhibition by Violeta Maya at the Palau de Casavells, on view from June 21 to August 24, 2025. With a practice deeply rooted in gesture, accident, and intuition, Violeta Maya opens the doors for the first time to the emotional and material backstage of her work. The artist steps away from the notion of the “finished painting” to honor what usually remains off-frame: tests, remnants, rituals, tools, and accidents that form the core of her process. Her work, known for its use of diluted pigments on large raw canvases, speaks of surrender, listening, and presence. In this exhibition, that pursuit expands into the symbolic: the brush as totem, intuition as dogma, and the unexpected as method. Violeta turns her studio into a sanctuary, drawing unexpected bridges between the pictorial gesture and the principle of life itself: her ambivalent forms (perhaps cells, perhaps comets) float in a cosmic limbo between the intimate and the universal.

Conceived in dialogue with the architecture of the Palau, the exhibition unfolds through installations that expand the pictorial language into the ritual, the sculptural, and the affective. Each room reveals a facet of the process and immerses us in the symbolic universe of the artist, beyond the canvas.

““This exhibition is a rehearsal for real life. A celebration of not knowing, of letting go, and of faith—the kind that, when present, turns painting into something truly alive.””

About the Artist

‘For me, painting is a hyper-sensory exercise. It is the way in which I concentrate my attention on the present moment, focusing on the textures, movements and rhythm of the brushstrokes, the expanding paint or the infinite sea of shades of the same colour. This way I manage, for a few moments, to abstract myself from life in a century saturated with images, information and productivity; as if it were a kind of meditation.
