Spinae | Duri is a solo exhibition by FX Harsono, presenting the theme of ‘the majesty and beauty of ancestralculture and the suffering that must be endured.’ Raised as a Catholic, FX Harsono found metaphoric similaritiesbetween the story of the trial of Jesus Christ and the regulations imposed to the Chinese community in Indonesiaduring the New Order. The ideas and thoughts took form of boats, crowns, and thorn reeds, accompanied by visualsand objects found during his (ongoing) research on the identity of the Chinese-Indonesian in cultural, historical, andsocial context.

About the Artist

FX Harsono is a seminal figure in the Indonesian contemporary art scene. Since his student days he has been an active critic of Indonesian politics, society, and culture, always updating his artistic language to the current new social and cultural contexts.

About the Gallery

In November 2022, BAIK ART opened its third location in Jakarta, Indonesia, with the inaugural exhibition titled Tumpeng. This new expansion can be traced back to BAIK ART’s residency exchange programme with Indonesian arts institutions and artists and aims to deepen a dialogue between Indonesian and global art scenes.
