Tom Burr Biography

Tom Burr is an American conceptual artist based in New York. He attended the Educational Center for the Arts High School, a multi-arts program taught in part by Yale University graduate students, where his senior year thesis reflected the Minimalist and Post-Minimalist movement by integrating sculptural elements with brief poetic texts. He undertook residencies at both Yale University in 2009 and the Edinburgh College of Art in 2010.

In the late 1990s, Burr embarked upon a body of work that continues today. Derived from the language and form of Tony Smith’s sculptures on the one hand, and closed architectural spaces such as bars, cages and boxes on the other, these works evoked notions of control, containment and the safeness of underground cultures.
