Cadogan Gallery is delighted to announce “Venticinque,” a new solo exhibition by Gabriele Cappelli and his first in Milan. Represented by Cadogan Gallery for over a decade, Cappelli’s works are part of numerous private collections in the United Kingdom, Europe, and the United States. With this exhibition, marking 25 years as a practising artist, Cappelli presents a series of new pieces created specifically for the Milan gallery, drawing inspiration from significant works in his oeuvre and reinterpreting key themes and sources of inspiration.
Following in the footsteps of the Young British Artists, Cappelli moved to London at the age of 25 and developed artistic research through the cultural vibrancy of the 2000s and meaningful interactions. He became interested in painting as a way of creating colours through experimentation, study, and combination which gave rise to new and unexpected balances in his work. The artist expresses colour in a manner that does not serve to describe, but rather “speaks for itself.”
An array of unique colours and undulating lines flow across the canvases that make up this new body of work, illustrating a music-like harmony. Using golden waxes and powders mixed with oil paints, he constructed abstract compositions that, despite their formal freedom, reflected a precise and conscious thought.
Clean and powerful, Gabriele Cappelli’s abstract geometric forms bring together a sense of classical aesthetic and a contemporary approach to colour and line. His artworks contain an inherent sense of balance in their proportion, form, and colour, distilling a universal aesthetic language into its purest form. Cappelli has always been interested in the dialogue between different disciplines, in both theory and technique his works encapsulate the harmony the artist has found between the past and present. He is able to recall historical artistic traditions through abstract and modernist shapes and textures, re-evoking and revitalising them by combining them with conceptual and visual proponents of contemporary art. Cappelli takes inspiration from architecture and urban planning but also from the structure of music, using these disciplines to inform the development of his works, creating a sense of order.
