Press Release

The studio is where things are made. It is both an ecology and a vehicle for the production, consideration and storage of ideas and material. I have been considering the studio as something akin to field recording: not necessarily a fixed site, although the location of my London studio is important as a place to return to. Agnes Varda talks about opening people up and finding landscapes inside them, and there is something of this in the studio for me.

Making is a small form of learning, a momentary engagement with the materials and circumstances in which I find myself. In the studio it is a way of accessing curiosity. Music is often playing. The studio acts like a fugue. Material and motif are introduced, expanded, broken down, repeated, exported and reimported into the ecology of the studio. Nothing is too small a gesture or too unimportant. If anything, the studio allows for a democratisation of material, where things of varying contexts contribute to the machine as a whole.

Field recordings are a means of mapping a site through sound. They record unpredictable organic and synthetic sounds which, together, acoustically describe a space. This is something I think about both in the studio and outside it. Material is taken from the world and returns to the world through processes of conversion, metamorphosis, renewal, revolution and shift.

The works are footprints in the snow. They describe a path that has been travelled and, for a moment, can exist in silence.
