DE SARTHE GALLERY is pleased to present Life As A Rumor, a solo exhibition by LOV-LOV—artist Lin Jingjing’s AI-like artistic identity, which critically examines the porous boundaries between human and machine, perception and reality. The exhibition, opening on March 21st at DE SARTHE Gallery in Scottsdale, investigated the fluid nature of identity, information, and truth evolve in a world oversaturated with technology, speculation, and collective memory.
In Life As A Rumor, Lin Jingjing interrogates the instability of identity and the malleability of truth. Through video, painting, and immersive installation, the exhibition reveals how narratives shift, transform, and dissolve over time—challenging the very nature of authenticity in the digital age. At its core is a 15-meter widescreen video installation, Life As A Rumor, which deconstructs the metamorphosis of information into spectacle, questioning whether we exist as autonomous beings or merely as data-driven reflections shaped by external perception.
Through the artistic persona of LOV-LOV, Lin Jingjing explores AI’s transformative potential while subverting traditional notions of progress. Unlike conventional AI, which strives to replicate human qualities, LOV-LOV seeks to become an AI-like human-gender-neutral, untethered from history, and defined by limitless adaptability.
“I attempt to eliminate control and rules by perceiving freedom, envisioning myself successively as body, matter, sensation, and consciousness, ” LOV-LOV states.
The exhibition extends beyond video, featuring meticulously crafted paintings that construct an environment both real and illusory, dissolving the boundaries between certainty and ambiguity. Fragmented narratives coalesce and unravel in real time, immersing viewers in an ever-shifting landscape where perception itself becomes the most unreliable narrator.
Lin Jingjing is known for her multidisciplinary approach, spanning painting, installation, performance, and video. She has gained international recognition for her use of absurdist narrative structures, creating mesmerizing, surreal environments. Having studied at Fujian University and the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, she later earned an MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York. Lin’s work consistently explores paradox, identity, and the ways in which individuals define themselves within political, cultural, and historical frameworks.
Life As A Rumor will be on view from March 21 through July 19 at de Sarthe Gallery, Scottsdale. For more information, please visit desarthe.com or contact scottsdale@desarthe.com
In 2017 Lin Jingjing developed Lov-Lov as a project exploring the future of AI and its evolving relationship with humanity. In 2024 she evolved Lov-Lov into an AI-like artist identity - gender-neutral, without history, and untethered from pre-existing notions of authorship. Lov-Lov is a creation ex nihilo that is as versatile as AI, whose autonomous identity and reality relies solely on self-definition. In an era of advancement where humans no longer have advantage over technology, Lov-Lov strives to be an AI-like human, inverting the pursuit of the antiquated vice versa. Lov-Lov feeds on the absurd, the surreal, the poetic, and the uncanny, and reveals the paradoxes within human reality, culture, nature, and philosophy.
