Press Release

Galatea is pleased to present Gabriel Branco: A luz sem nome [The Light Without Name], a solo exhibition by São Paulo–based artist Gabriel Branco (1997, São Paulo), opening on Friday, January 30, from 6 pm to 9 pm, at the gallery’s Salvador location. The exhibition occupies the vault space and inaugurates Galatea’s 2026 program in the Bahian capital, alongside the group exhibition ‘Barracas e fachadas do nordeste’ [Stalls and Façades of the Northeast], a collaboration between Galatea and Nara Roesler.

The exhibit brings together more than ten new paintings, produced in 2025, and features a critical text by painter Paulo Monteiro. In this series, Gabriel Branco deepens an investigation grounded in the body, light, and color as structuring elements of composition. Working with oil and beeswax on canvas, the artist builds veiled and luminous surfaces in which organic forms seem to emerge and dissolve simultaneously.

Abstract painting appears as a complement to the artist’s photographic practice, which explores themes related to urban life in the outskirts of São Paulo. Abstraction operates as a means to express memories, affects, and lived experiences, articulating a sensorial dialogue with urban reality.
