Gladstone presents a solo presentation at TEFAF New York of early works by Carroll Dunham, highlighting his experimentation of materiality and composition in the 1980s. Dunham’s paintings blend organic and psychedelic colors on wood and veneer, utilising the grain and raw texture of the material to frame abstract, biological shapes that evoke both familiarity and amorphousness.

In a 2008 interview in Carroll Dunham Paintings on Wood 1982-1987, Dunham reflected, “I was thinking about a materialist philosophy merging with a matrix of illusionism to create a complex dimensional framework. Later on, wood became a subject to paint, which was a new way to look at the same thing and which gave it almost a narrative function.”
