Press Release

This November, Hauser & Wirth New York will mount a special presentation of acclaimed American artist Paul McCarthy’s seminal and biting satirical film Painter (1995), as well as a notable selection of paintings and other works highlighting the artist’s practice, on the second floor of the gallery’s 22nd Street location. Featuring McCarthy as the eponymous painter, _Painter _draws on elements characteristic of his oeuvre, from bodily functions and the grotesque to black comedy and repetition, in order to caricature key players in the art world—collectors, dealers, and, above all, the heroic artist. One of the most influential and groundbreaking artists of our time, McCarthy is celebrated for his visceral, often hauntingly humorous work in a variety of mediums—from film, video, performance and photography, to sculpture, drawing and painting.

About the Artist

Paul McCarthy is widely considered to be one of the most influential and groundbreaking contemporary American artists. Born in 1945, and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah, he first established a multi-faceted artistic practice, which sought to break the limitations of painting by using unorthodox materials such as bodily fluids and food. He has since become known for visceral, often hauntingly humorous work in a variety of mediums - from performance, photography, film, and video, to sculpture, drawing, and painting.
