This exhibition took place when the gallery was previously known as Choi & Lager.
CHOI&LAGER Gallery is pleased to present its first exhibition by Jinyoung Yu in Cologne, Germany. I'm OK features a comprehensive series of the artist's work, shown for the first time in its entirety.
The sculptor Jinyoung Yu uses transparent PVC to manufacture life-size, doll-like figures. The artist often refers to these works as 'invisible people'. Inscrutable and mask-like in their expression, they virtually disappear behind patterns and motifs, colourful clothing and accessorised pets. Jinyoung Yu's 'invisible people' represent the destructive influences and trappings of contemporary, consumerist society. In particular her work examines issues of anonymity, loneliness and the loss of personal, human interaction. These ideas are echoed in the exhibition's title: I'm OKoften used as a token, automatic response behind which true feeling may be concealed.
In addition to sculpture, previously unseen photographs and drawings by the artist are exhibited as part of this exhibition.
Jinyoung Yu was born in Korea in 1977. She lives and works in Seoul. In 2005 she completed her Master's degree in Sculpture at Sungshin Women's University in Seoul. Since graduating Jinyoung Yu has exhibited internationally with a recent exhibition at Union Gallery in London and group exhibitions in New York, Miami and Los Angeles. Following her exhibition at CHOI&LAGER Gallery in Cologne, her work will be presented at the Yellow Stone Art Museum in Montana, USA.
