Lawrie Shabibi returns to Abu Dhabi Art with a presentation of early works by Mehdi Moutashar (b. 1943, Iraq), including paintings and drawings from the 1960s and 1970s—a definitive stage in his artistic practice. Most of the pieces on display have not been seen since they were produced—the presentation marks an important history for these works. A catalogue has also been produced which highlights his practice showing the transition from his historic works and new works.
Moutashar's art lies at the confluence of two artistic traditions, the western heritage of geometric abstraction and the Islamic aesthetic tradition of geometrical order and lines. His art is a radical, geometrical abstraction with figures that are never enclosed inside the limits of a contour but open, fragmentary and constantly shifting.
Presenting artworks that are quintessential examples of his practice, the solo show celebrates Moutashar as a meeting point between Islamic tradition and experimental optical art.
Abu Dhabi Art takes place at Manarat Al Saadiyat, Abu Dhabi, from 17-21 November 2021.
