Press Release
Martin Browne Contemporary is pleased to present a new exhibition by celebrated abstract painter Michael Cusack.

In this new body of work Called Axiom (a proposition that is not susceptible of proof or disproof ) Cusack presents a series of paintings that are an exploration of form, gesture and space. Organic shapes are rendered in tonal greys, then layered one after the other creating subtle spatial shifts that allow them to hover on the surface. These forms are framed by contrasting Greens, ambers and burnt oranges that sear the canvas adding light and dimension. Although the colour and form is deliberately reductive, Cusack’s surfaces are incredibly evocative and complex. These intricacies allow the viewer to form their own tangential experience.

Commenting on the exhibition Cusack says of his work “With every new body of work I am trying to re-write. Not a new language but trying to inform my current language with new codes, new rhythms, new passages. In this series, the shapes are larger; they invade the canvas with greater force and density. The colour is bolder and the shapes bind the compositions together or in some cases holds them apart.
The work is not specific per se and can be read as autobiographical as much as any reference to a certain place or time. . If the paintings tell a story it is their own, of shape making, of materials and a residue of experiences ”
