Julio Anaya Cabanding creates pictorial interventions in the urban landscape by meticulously crafting replicas of famous paintings and displaying them in unlikely public places. Born in Málaga, Spain, Cabanding began his practice by recreating instantly recognizable works of art from local museums including that of Pablo Picasso, who was also born there. Painting on found materials like cardboard and wood or on city walls, Cabanding creates recreations of works by Johannes Vermeer, Rembrandt van Rijn, and Claude Monet, complete with trompe l’oeil frames. His artworks meet their viewers where they are—on their commutes, while shopping, and in other moments of daily transit.
