Claude Rutault de-finition/method 134 : “inventory of the collection", 1984 Paint on canvas / Variable dimensions according to the actualisation

de-finition/method :
"inventory of the collection, made up of small canvasses set on one or several shelves like books in a library.

every time a new acquisition is made, one of the small canvasses is painted the same colour as the wall and placed on the wall as a caption to the artwork that has been added to the collection. when another artwork is acquired, the little canvas is placed back on the shelf and the process continues. the inventory records the colours of the walls on which the collection is shown. the sale of artworks does not mean that the canvasses are removed from the shelf. they are, however, painted black. little by little the artwork takes on a life of its own. it could even become the only artwork, the last in the collection"
