Press Release
P K M Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Heeseung Chung (b.1974) as the Project Exhibition at the gallery’s Temporary Exhibition Space. The exhibition showcases 5 works by the artist, including her recent portraits and still-life works.

Chung’s frank portrayal of everyday objects raises questions about the limitations and nature of photography, the core medium of representation. Capturing her surroundings in her camera frame, Chung looks at the objects placed in the flow of time — such as figures, body, plant, architecture and space — in a still yet animated, cold yet warm atmosphere. While her works seem to be cold and dry with the least degree of intervention from the artist, she captures with intensity the emotional condition of a moment in reality beyond the poetic surface built on orderly expression.

Celebrated in Korea and internationally as one of the most acclaimed photographers, Chung graduated from Hongik University, Seoul with a BFA in Painting, and received her BFA and MFA in Photography from London College of Communication. She has held numerous exhibitions in New York, London and Seoul, and has also been prized the Songeun Art Prize and the 11th Daum Prize from Parkgeonhi Foundation. She is currently participating in ARTSPECTRUM 2014 held at Samsung Museum of Art, LEEUM.

About the Gallery

PKM Gallery was established in 2001 in Seoul by Park Kyung-mee—an art historian and the commissioner of the Korean Pavilion at the 49th Venice Biennale—with a mission to promote Korean art abroad and to foster conversation between Korean and international contemporary art. With previous locations in Hwa-dong and Cheongdam-dong, the gallery moved to its current space in Samcheong-dong—an artistic and cultural hub in the heart of Seoul—in 2015.
