Gallery Rosenfeld presents a solo booth of new works by Ndidi Emefiele at 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair 2025, marking the artist’s second solo presentation at the fair. Emefiele continues to expand her distinctive visual language through layered compositions that bring together painting, collage, textiles, and found materials. Her practice is rooted in a deeply personal yet collectively resonant exploration of identity, gender, and self-representation. The figures that inhabit her canvases confront the gaze with confidence and ambiguity, reflecting both individual experience and broader social narratives around womanhood and power.

This presentation anticipates Emefiele’s forthcoming museum solo exhibition at the Modern Art Museum (MAM) in Shanghai in 2027, offering an insight into a pivotal moment in her evolving practice. The new works reveal a more introspective and experimental approach, where abstraction and texture become vehicles for psychological depth and spiritual reflection. Through a refined engagement with materiality and form, Emefiele continues to articulate the complexities of contemporary African identity while situating her work within a global discourse on representation and agency.

About the Artist

Drawing on cultural, gendered and personal references, Ndidi Emefiele creates layered figurative compositions that, dynamic in brush stroke and in juxtaposition of colour, conjure the complexity of contemporary experience and female identity. Emerging out of the Nigerian panorama, the strength of her narrative becomes even more pronounced as she encompasses collage, textiles and traditional materials conveying a strong sense of cultural heritage and aesthetics inspired by her homeland.
