In Indulkana Soup, Kaylene Whiskey’s vibrant artworks celebrate strong, resilient heroines—from Dolly Parton and Wonder Woman to biblical figures—imbuing them with themes of empowerment and self-determination. Set in Indulkana, a remote community in South Australia, Whiskey’s works seamlessly merge traditional Anangu motifs with elements of pop culture, constructing a rich and dynamic narrative of connection and cultural pride.

This exhibition, featuring her acclaimed 2023 Archibald Prize finalist painting of the same name, serves as a jubilant ode to community and Country. It envisions a realm where imagination intersects with reality, and where friendship flourishes amidst superheroes, Sister Act, and song. Infused with humour and heartfelt storytelling, Whiskey’s practice offers a compelling exploration of contemporary Aboriginal life, providing a incisive commentary on cultural identity. Through her work, she invites audiences to share in a vibrant celebration of resilience, creativity, and communal strength.
