Starkwhite is pleased to present Deep Water by Phil Dadson from 9 February to 5 March 2011.

Deep Water is a new video and digital still series that continue a direction of performance and video works begun in the mid 70s, based on triadic structure and dynamics: works such as Triad 1, Triad 4, Gung Ho 1,2.3D, Uncharted Crossing, 3DMusic, Three Short Films and others. Deep Water extends the preoccupations of two earlier video meditations in particular; Uncharted Crossing (1989) and Chthonian Pulse (Polar Projects, 2004), where a worldupsidedown view of landscape and water, its refractive surface and sounds, intersect with reflections on geometry, nature, signs and portents.

Video, sound and performance art has run parallel with Dadson’s musical history
from the early 70s to the present day. His contribution to the arts was acknowledged with the award of the New Zealand Arts Foundation Artists Laureate in 2001, an ONZM in 2004 and a nomination for the Walters Prize in 2006. He performs and exhibits internationally and his work is included in collections in New Zealand and overseas.

Located in New Zealand on Auckland’s Karangahape Road, Starkwhite presents a programme of artists’ projects, solo shows, independently curated exhibitions and occasional forays into new music and other interdisciplinary practices. Starkwhite also represents artists from New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific Rim.
