Press Release

The Columns Gallery is delighted to announce Michael Wesely: Doubleday, a solo exhibition showcasing the extraordinary work of renowned photographer Michael Wesely. Together, these exhibitions expand on Wesely’s exploration of urban transformation and the passage of time through his groundbreaking work in long-exposure photography.

In Doubleday, Michael Wesely invites viewers on an immersive journey through the rich tapestry of Berlin’s architectural evolution. By superimposing contemporary photographs onto archival images of Berlin’s ever-changing architecture, Wesely captures the essence of 19th and 20th-century Berlin.

Born in Munich in 1963, Michael Wesely studied at the Bayerische Staatslehranstalt für Photographie from 1986 to 1988 and at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste München from 1988 to 1994. With his often extremely long exposures, he captures processes that extend over periods of minutes, many hours, and even years. His work includes capturing the passing of time through various subjects

In long-term projects, he has photographed the construction of several important urban structures in Munich, Berlin, São Paulo, and other cities. Since 2000, he has lived and worked in Berlin.

Each image crafted by Wesely tells a compelling story, weaving together the threads of history and modernity to create a series of striking visual narratives that captivate the imagination and illuminate the essence of Berlin’s ever-changing character.
