White Cube is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new paintings by American artist Howardena Pindell. With a career spanning over five decades, Pindell lends a dynamic materiality to the canons of painting.
Drawing from a profound childhood memory, the circular motif has become one of the most enduring elements in Pindell’s body of work, manifesting in diverse forms such as ellipses, perforations and hole-punched dots. In the late 1960s, the artist pioneered her iconic spray-painting technique, in which the motif is atomised and accrued, resulting in generative stipples of light and colour.
This exhibition marks the inaugural presentation of Pindell’s work since the gallery announced representation of the artist in May 2024.
Howardena Pindell’s profoundly personal and politically charged work delivers a dynamic materiality to the canons of painting – serving as much as a diaristic account of her own biography as a means to interrogate broader issues of social justice. With a practice spanning over five decades and encompassing a diverse range of mediums – including painting, collage, drawing and film – Pindell lends visceral form to a rigorous intellectual inquiry of the given subject.

An international art powerhouse, White Cube was established in 1993 in London by art dealer Jay Jopling. In its space on Duke Street, it served as the early exhibition venue for many now internationally acclaimed British artists, including Tracey Emin, Gilbert & George, Rachel Kneebone and Antony Gormley, who still show with the gallery today.
