Press Release

New York-based artist Ilana Savdie (b.1986, Barranquilla, Colombia) draws on a range of subjects as source material, creating intricately detailed, vibrant paintings in acrylic, oil and beeswax that meditate on corporeal and metaphysical excess.

Savdie will unveil new paintings at White Cube New York, following her solo exhibition, ‘Radical Contractions’, at Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, which ran from 14 July to 5 November 2023.

About the Artist

Ilana Savdie explores themes of performance, transgression, identity and power in her vibrant, large-scale paintings. Assembling fragments into finely detailed, fluid compositions, her canvases pulsate with flamboyant colour, conjoining, merging and blending their forms in an aesthetics of riotous excess. At their core, Savdie’s paintings aim to dismantle ideas of binary or fixed identity, and to embrace the notion of performance as a transformative tool.
