Press Release

Opening on 10 July at White Cube Mason’s Yard, Minoru Nomata’s first solo exhibition in London features two news series of paintings: the first expands upon the artist’s ongoing ‘Continuum’ series, in which solitary architectural structures rise from low horizon lines, ascending toward the sky. In the second series, Nomata turns his attention from the astral towards the subaqueous, depicting immense hydrological formations – icebergs, frozen waterfalls and glaciers – interacting with manmade mechanical interventions. In both series, Nomata places mortal endeavour in contention with the sublime forces of nature, a preoccupation visible throughout the artist’s work.

About the Artist

Over the past four decades, Minoru Nomata has developed a lexicon of imaginary architectonic and topographical forms to create paintings that transcend specifics of time and place. Characterised by a lack of human presence, Nomata’s visionary paintings combine the familiar with the mysterious and the heroic with the haunting. As the artist states: ‘Painting is an escapist world, but I would like it to be a place to become energised.’

About the Gallery

An international art powerhouse, White Cube was established in 1993 in London by art dealer Jay Jopling. In its space on Duke Street, it served as the early exhibition venue for many now internationally acclaimed British artists, including Tracey Emin, Gilbert & George, Rachel Kneebone and Antony Gormley, who still show with the gallery today.
