Yumiko Chiba Associates is excited to present an exhibition of new work by Shiho Yoshida, whose dedicated, free-ranging pursuit of the possibilities of photography has earned widespread recognition in the art world, including a Grand Prix at the 11th 1_WALL exhibition (2014), selection for the 11th shiseido art egg exhibition (2017), and the 46th Kimura Ihei Award (2020 + 2021).
Yoshida is an artist who explores the nature of photography as a medium in today’s world, wielding both digital and analog cameras, plus a smartphone, multiple printing/output devices and technologies, and digital image data, and combining layer upon layer of analog image manipulation, such as negatives, altering and amplifying along the way. In her show _The Vestiges of the Unseen _staged at BUG last year, she composed the space from a vast cache of images duplicated using an offset printer.
Images In Yoshida’s works gradually metamorphose by passing through camera, monitor, printer, and photographic paper; repeated transformation turning them from image, into something monstrous. In those works it is perhaps this whole process that is viewed as “photography.”
The title ‘Hallucination’ refers to the phenomenon by which AI generates information that in reality does not exist (and in that sense is illusory and ghostly). Photographs here that one assumes to be grounded in objective actual existence and facts, can be found intersecting with ghostly, illusory states. Don’t miss this mixture of new and older work from one of today’s most intriguing photographic artists.
Drawing on images from both the digital and physical worlds, contemporary Japanese artist Shiho Yoshida investigates the process of building up a photographic image. In 2017, Yoshida was the finalist of the Prix Pictet Japan Award for her ‘Quarry/The Story of a Stone’ series.
