BUNDIT PUANGTHONG

b. 1974, Thailand
Bundit Puangthong Biography

The art of Bundit Puangthong typifies a phenomenon of our times. This art emerges from ‘in-between’ cultures, and dramatises the burgeoning sense of possibilities developing in our increasingly interconnected world.

Before coming to Australia, Bundit initially completed formal training in traditional Thai art, and later studied contemporary Western methods under the guidance of renowned Thai artist Montien Boonma.

Such a transition from one country to another invariably destabilises these conventions, and this artist has used the opportunity to explore experiences of cultural confusion and assimilation. His openness to a new place and its multicultural riches has produced a fascinating visual palimpsest that summarises his responses.

Employing a wide range of media, and guided by an acute awareness of social phenomena, Bundit utilises the pictorial space as a site of negotiation between inherited and adopted motifs. Via this jumble of words, themes and associations – Buddhist, Thai, American Pop and an ever-increasing array of Australian idiosyncrasies - he encourages us to discover and enjoy the multiplicity of meanings and commonalities that weave together to create our cultural fabric.
