Carl Johnson is an American artist based in Hong Kong. With a particular focus on stage design for theatre and performance, Johnson’s eclectic body of work extends across the media of painting, drawing and sculpture. Johnson’s recent works are rooted in the performative transformation of found objects, images and ideas. Evocative of human figures, Johnson’s fragile, orb-like sculptures are assembled to evoke an atmosphere of eeriness even as they allude to high drama.
For Johnson, the devolution of the found object from its original role or context is a transformative act that can be simultaneously violent and poetic. Johnson’s sculptural installations integrate space, sound, light, colour and movement to suggest new narratives bolstered by a sense of dramatic tension.
Johnson has designed extensively for theatrical productions, with his work featured in performances in Taiwan, China, Japan, Singapore, France and multiple locations in the United States. He has also acted as artist in residence at a number of institutions in Asia and the United States.
