David Jolly Biography

David Jolly’s oil paintings reflect on the role of the artist as witness and traveller. Inspired by the documentary tradition of reportage, and possessing an acute sensitivity to his surroundings, Jolly works with a wide range of subject matter that directly reflects upon the places and events that he has personally experienced. His images also often focus on natural and urban environments — and the point at which the two intersect. His works are technically exceptional, with a luminous and serene flat finish.

Jolly has presented regular solo exhibitions at Sutton Gallery since 2001. Selected group exhibitions include: Melbourne Now, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, 2013; Artists' Proof #1, Monash University Museum of Art, Melbourne, 2012; The Futile City, Heide Museum of Modern Art, Melbourne, 2011; Photocopier, Centre for Contemporary Photography, Melbourne, 2010; The Shilo Project, Ian Potter Museum of Art, The University of Melbourne, and Wangaratta Art Gallery, Victoria, 2009; Look!
