Deaf Tommy Mungatopi (c.1927–1989), a revered Tiwi artist and cultural leader recognised as one of the most important mid‑century Indigenous artists, was known for his distinctive Pukamani poles and paintings featuring alternating dot‑bands made with a wooden comb (pwoja) and linked diamond motifs that create shimmering, atmospheric effects.
