Dickie Minyintiri was a Pitjantjatjara ngangkari and cultural custodian, and one of the APY Lands’ great painters, though his work emerged remarkably late in an extraordinarily long life. Born in the desert before the establishment of Ernabella Mission in 1937, Minyintiri lived through pre-contact life as a child and became a widely respected knowledge bearer across the region.
Minyintiri joined Ernabella Arts in 2005, already in his eighties. In the nine years before his death in 2014, Minyintiri developed a distinctive style: intense colour grounds overlaid with fine white or cream line work, applied with both brush and punu stick, depicting ancestral beings – rock wallaby, kangaroo, stone curlew and emu – for whom he held responsibility.
