Gabriela Melzer Biography

Gabriela Melzer (1999) lives and works in São Paulo. She spent time in New York, where she honed her painting and drawing techniques through courses at The New School and the Art Students League. Melzer’s work features organic forms born from the interplay of movement and color, through which she seeks to counter the immediacy and acceleration of contemporary events. Following in the path of lyrical abstraction, she absorbs her surroundings by reinterpreting and interconnecting elements of the world with dense, rounded contours.

Melzer aims to offer a visual respite, creating internal landscapes that play with the intangible, inviting viewers to look beyond immediate comprehension. She draws inspiration from the seemingly random yet patterned forms found in nature, with all their imperfections and fractal designs. Her work, with its flowing colors and organic movement, invites the viewer to uncover its possibilities, navigating the spaces opened by the grid-like compositions.

Reflecting on her creative process, Melzer states:

“In my work, my goal is not merely to represent the world but to explore these gaps—places where the physical and non-physical meet, creating a reality we feel but do not see. This is an attempt to open spaces accessible to all, even if they are not clearly defined. It’s about allowing ourselves to feel beyond what we’re used to, together, and finding ways to give shape to what would typically go unnoticed.”

Noteworthy exhibitions she has participated in include: Diálogos (Group Exhibition, Arpa & Shopping Cidade Jardim, São Paulo, 2024); Líquen teso (Group Exhibition, Galatea, São Paulo, 2024); Lux Feminae (Group Exhibition, curated by Olivia Zabludovicz and Lily Cohen, New York, 2022); and So Show (Group Exhibition, São Paulo, 2022).
