GEOFFREY BOUILLOT
b. 1990, FranceGeoffrey Bouillot (b. 1990, Chalon-sur-Saône, France) is a Paris-trained, Tokyo-based painter whose work brings the structural logic of the French avant-garde into dialogue with the restraint and precision of contemporary Japanese visual culture. Working exclusively in acrylic, Bouillot builds a monochrome pictorial language in which figures and objects are deconstructed into modular components—segmented, reassembled, and rendered with a surface finish that reads as mechanical, yet is executed entirely by hand.
This tension between the industrial and the handmade is central to his practice. Bouillot’s canvases suggest mass production and digital image culture while insisting on the discipline of painting as a manual act. As the artist states: “Nothing is generated by machines—everything is painted by hand. This discipline is my way of resisting the chaos of the modern world.”
His most recent body of work, the Chrome Memory series (2025), takes Western canonical paintings—Monet, Manet, da Vinci, Gauguin among others—as structural starting points. Rather than reproducing these images, Bouillot extracts their underlying compositional logic: the distribution of figures, the dynamics of light and shadow, the spatial architecture of the picture plane. Recast in his signature metallic monochrome, the original sources become latent—present as visual memory rather than citation.
Bouillot has exhibited internationally across Tokyo, Paris, London, New York, Hong Kong, Taipei, Miami, and Seoul. His work is held in institutional collections including the Xiao Museum of Contemporary Art (China) and the Mangroves Foundation (Spain), and has appeared at auction at Sotheby’s and Phillips. Chrome Memory was presented at Seoul Art Now (January–March 2026) as part of the official cultural partnership programme marking the 140th anniversary of Franco-Korean diplomatic relations.
