GEOFFREY BOUILLOT

Geoffrey Bouillot is a French artist based in Tokyo whose practice brings together the compositional logic developed in post-Cubist French painting and the visual clarity of contemporary Japanese aesthetics. His paintings are characterised by modular, mechanically assembled figures rendered with precisely segmented gradients and flawlessly smooth surfaces—an aesthetic that evokes industrial manufacture while remaining entirely the product of the artist’s hand.

Chrome Memory is Bouillot’s most recent body of work. Taking canonical paintings by Monet, Manet, da Vinci, Gauguin, and others as structural starting points, the artist does not reproduce these works but instead extracts their underlying pictorial architecture—the arrangement of figures, the dynamics of light and shadow, the spatial logic of the composition. Recast in Bouillot’s signature metallic monochrome palette, the source images recede from direct citation into the register of visual memory: present as residue rather than reference.

The title Chrome refers to the defining condition of these surfaces—cold, refined, and precisely controlled. Against this backdrop, the minimal traces of colour and form that remain operate not as decoration but as visual imprint: the way memory persists not as faithful image but as selective trace. Every work in the exhibition appears, at first encounter, to be a digital rendering. Each is painted entirely by hand.
