Jagath Ravindra is a leading abstract contemporary painter whose signature large scale canvas works confront the themes of identity, society, culture and memory. His oeuvre is a universal contemplation of the environment, of spirituality and of the human body. His work is largely abstracted, but highly emotive. Relationships are established through subtle tonal variation and expressive brushwork, with Ravindra’s urgency communicated through the speed that acrylic allows. In his most recent works the artist returns to the colour palette of his early years, in a series titled blooming beauty, inspired by the full moon shining on the lotus pond.
Jagath Ravindra is currently Dean of the Faculty of Visual Arts for the University of the Visual and Performing Arts in Colombo. His work has been exhibited internationally in Bangladesh, Dubai, Nepal, the UK, Pakistan, Korea and Maldives, and his work is housed in the permanent collections of the Xi’an Art Museum and the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.
