Jaya Gunguly Biography

Born 1958, in a conservative middle class Bengali family, Jaya graduated from Indian College of Arts, Calcutta. She held her first solo exhibition in Academy of Fine Arts Calcutta, 1982.

Jaya relates to the behaviour and situation of mankind in the society and her reactions to the various forces upon her by the society and environment. Historical endeavours of the balancing acts of mankind with the nature which gets disturbed continuously due to mankind’s efforts to acquire and command greater achievements utilizing its intellects and aspirations.

Her themes focus on people – their intra-actions as well as their interactions among themselves in society and/or natural surroundings. These perceptions, however vary from time to time as Jaya believes nothing is absolute and final. Depending on his/her perception at that point of time, one can always discover a new dimension to a subject, event or happening. If she notices a subjective thing or event, it reacts in her not the way it appears apparently but with the backdrop of such a bigger scenario of mankind’s continuous balancing acts. Thus the landscape remains the same but only object de Art changes their position from time to time in our world.

Jaya has received many reviews in Calcutta, Bombay and New Delhi newspapers, and art journal, etc. Hailed by The Illustrated Weekly of India once and again as the top ten young promising contemporary painters in India, and as the most promising artist in Bengal of the modern era, her works can be found in the collection of the Consulate of the Netherlands, New Delhi and many other private collections in India and abroad.
