Joseph Yaeger Biography

Joseph Yaeger is known for creating psychologically complex portraits that interrogate the visual and emotional distance between the intimate and the unknown.

Always finding their initial genesis in his writing practice, Yaeger’s stylistically distinct paintings often take the form of tightly cropped and emotionally ambiguous portraits that depict his subjects in moments of disruption. Based on his own reconstructed and often factually flawed recollections of extant source material, the artist’s watercolour on gesso-primed canvases probe our compulsion to search for evidence of the familiar in culturally manufactured imagery. Examining consciousness as an imperfect tool of translation, Yaeger’s paintings contemplate memory as a dream state in which sense collides with invention.

The artist has been the subject of solo exhibitions at The Perimeter, London (2023); Antenna Space, Shanghai (2022); Project Native Informant, London (2021); and V.O. Curations, London (2020), in addition to group shows at Modern Art, London (2024); Hauser & Wirth Somerset, Bruton (2024); Lisson Gallery, London (2024); k11, Shanghai (2023); Hannah Hoffman Gallery, Los Angeles (2022); David Lewis, New York (2022); and The Perimeter, London (2022). The artist’s work is held in the collection of the Kistefos Museum, Jevnaker, Norway.

Yaeger (b. 1986, Helena, Montana) lives and works in London. He received his BFA from Rhode Island School of Design (2008) and his MFA in painting at the Royal College of Art, London (2019).

“Joseph’s ability to address new formal and conceptual concerns within painting feels incredibly fresh,” said Max Falkenstein, Partner, Gladstone Gallery. “His experimentation and ingenuity speak to the ethos of Gladstone’s program, so we’re tremendously excited to welcome him to the Gallery and to work with Modern Art, London to create new platforms for his practice.”
