Born in 1974, Katrin Fridriks is a conceptual artist from Reykjavik, Iceland. Her abstract works of highly imaginative composition and flamboyant colors are extracted from many sources: the dramatic, pre-historical landscape of her home land, Japanese calligraphy, Abstract Expressionism and her early interest in architecture. Throughout her energetic oeuvre, Katrin Fridriks has developed an original visual language that envelopes idiosyncratic yet bold monochromatic effects of drippings and metallic colorimetry, which add a physical, three-dimensional quality to the works. These pictorial elements inspire wild imaginations in the audience, from dynamic natural processes including volcanic eruptions and glacial floods, to a more abstract level of representations of cosmic forces.
Fridriks’ painting process of pouring liberal streams of acrylic paint directly on thick, multilayered canvases reveals the energetic and physical process of her artistic creation. Rather than capturing a frozen moment, the paintings epitomize the moment of an eruption, one related to the evolution of the universe from singularity, the origin of all beings.
Katrin Fridriks has been active in the art scene for about ten years now, having participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in international galleries, museums, art fairs, supported by major grants and important commissions. She currently lives and works between Luxemburg and Paris.
