Lim Ok-Sang, who has worked since the 1970-80s period of social and political turmoil in Korea, is a Minjung artist striving to express the spirit of the times through his paintings. As a founding member of Reality and Utterance and the Third Group, which are important historical movements in Korean art history, he has actively participated in the Minjung (people's) art movement by realistically expressing social participatory messages on his canvases. Not limited to a single area of art, Lim has worked with painting, sculpture and installation, transcending the boundaries of genre. He has also utilised diverse media including soil, metal, paper, grain and seeds. Through realistic images and familiar material, he embodies realistic stories close to our lives. The resultant works are exhibited not only in the limited spaces of galleries, but also in public spaces such as parks and squares, thus extending their significance. For almost five decades, Lim Ok-Sang has spoken of himself and of society through painting, and has presented spectators with contemporary topics. His works are the artist's voice directed toward utopia.
