Lise Sarfati received her Master’s Degree in Russian Studies from the Sorbonne in 1979. She made picture taking her career after working as the official photographerfor the Acadamie des Beaux Arts in Paris. Sarfati received grants from the Fiacre Ministère de laCulture, Paris, and Villa Médicis Hors les Murs in the 1980’s. From 1989 to 1998 Sarfati lived inRussia, doing documentary photography, some of which laid the groundwork for her laterinterest in focusing on the lives of young adults. In 1997 she joined Magnum Photos andbecame a full member in 2001.
Lise Sarfati’s work has been the subject of exhibitions worldwide and can be found in such collections as the Los Angeles Country Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, MaisonEuropennée de la Photographie in Paris, the Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Her publications include Acta Est (Phaidon, 2000), The New Life(Twin Palms, 2005), Fashion Magazine: Austin, Texas (Magnum Photos, 2009), and SHE (TwinPalms, 2012). Sarfati splits her time between Paris, France and Los Angeles, California.
